Jan Britton and The Public

It was always rumoured that Tom Watson MP had discussions with Val Bailey before the bent deal to destroy The Public. In a recent Freedom of Information (FOI) request corrupt Labour Sandwell Council refused to disclose emails between the Council and Watson on this subject. How very strange!

But the same FOI did flush out some of the awful truth behind this con job.

On 23rd January, 2013 Jan Britton, the head of the Council's bent paid service, wrote an email a redacted copy of which was leaked to The Skidder:

"Just so you are aware, Val Bailey of Sandwell College has asked me not to raise The Public at this afternoon's meeting - because she hasn't yet discussed it with her Governing Body, who will be present at the meeting.

I will remind her that we have another interested party interested in The Public and that the College need to move more quickly if they are serious."

And so we know that Britton was in communication with Bailey at an early stage and before even the College Board new anything about it.

It now transpires that the email was sent to the three councillors determined to destroy the building - Cllrs Cooper, Hussain and Eling.

SMBC refuse to disclose any communications between SMBC and The College/Val Bailey for this period and, unbelievably, say they have no record of the meeting their own Chief Executive [sic] was referring to! Once again - fraud was perpetuated during the Jan Britton era by the practice this effort allowed of having un-minuted meetings.

At the time Cooper and Co were out to kill-off the building they put it about that they had other interested parties in the building which was complete b*llocks and this blog, in its early days, pointed out that the College had the bent "socialists" over a barrel since they were the only deal in town. This is why the College completely shafted the Council - eventually getting a no-rent deal AND with SMBC still paying for the maintenance of the building!!!!

But you will see from the above email that Jan Britton was also spinning this yarn although the College were not stupid enough to fall for it.

The FOI reply is slightly ambiguous on this but says "the local authority only had the one preferred developer for the Public." If this refers to the developer being The College then Jan Britton was deliberately lying - albeit with the approval of the three councillors. If, on the other hand, it means that SMBC also rigged the choice of contractor then that too is true as a six-million pound contract was doled out to Interserve (RIP) without open tender (the "socialists" routed the contract via the already defunct "Building Schools for the Future" framework and, unfortunately, this was never challenged by judicial review.)

Britton must be on the thinnest of thin ice with the change of political leadership but inexplicably hangs on. Perhaps the new regime will investigate the paper trail here and whether he was party to deliberate deception?

In the crazy world that is "Sadwell" Cooper ensured that Britton was then placed on the Board of Governors of the College where he remains to this day. And so other Board members rub shoulders with a man who was, in his own words in the above email, doing deals behind their backs.

The Chair of the Governors at the time of the bent deal deal was one John Tew, believed to be one and the same person as one of the three "independent persons" appointed to advise the corrupt Council on standards issues. If it is one and the same person this shows the utter contempt of the comrades for local people and that Labour are prepared to sh*t on them from a great height!
