It has been announced tonight that Kim Bromley-Derry (a bloke) has been appointed as the Interim Chief Executive (CE) at bent Labour Sandwell Council. He used to be the boss of basket case Newham Council in London where he was notable mainly for his extremely high pay. In the last couple of years he has been involved in a property development company.
But nothing is straightforward when bent Sandwell Labour get involved and serious questions are already being raised about the recruitment process.
Regular readers will know that inexperienced Councillor Rajbir Singh - only elected 3 years ago - became Leader under supervision from non-elected Labour Party figures. That's democracy for you. It is said that the Local Government Association has also been sticking its oar in despite controversial interventions in the past.
Singh botched the sacking of previous Chief Executive, David Stevens, of which more anon. The initial rumour was that this failure was going to cost local folk £300,000, but the talk is that the final pay-off for someone who should have been sacked without compensation is nearer half a million pounds!
Most of the top tier of management has collapsed and there is no-one to act-up as CE pending a replacement so that an outsider is to be brought in.
Labour sources said last week ie. in August, that Kim Bromley-Derry (KBD) was the decided choice BEFORE the interviews took place between him and another candidate. And lo, he got the job.
Tonight a sharp-eyed Skidder reader - "H" - has been in touch pointing out that KBD had set up a brand-new management consultancy business, KBD Solutions Limited, on 26th July, 2021. Indeed the papers for the new Company were prepared on 23rd July around two weeks BEFORE the interview.
What do you reckon readers - yet another amazing Sandwell "coincidence" or was the process rigged so that KBD knew he would get the job over a fortnight ago?
As if this stink isn't bad enough, this looks a ploy to avoid being paid via the PAYE tax system and for KBD to pay less tax on his earnings. It also means that his fees are likely to be astronomical.
Singh must be dethroned forthwith and an independent investigation started into both the Stevens pay-off and the strange circumstances of this appointment.
